Advent is celebrated in German speaking Countries as in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The Advent (derived from the latin word “arrival”) of the Christkind (Christ child) is celebrated in this special time before Christmas. The Advent season starts with the first Advent which is four Sundays before Christmas Eve. This year’s Advent begins November 27. In the German tradition, many families have an Adventskranz (Advent wreath) with evergreen branches and four candles to light one candle per advent until all four candles are lit on Christmas Eve. This season is also often celebrated with an Adventskalender (Advent calendar) which has 24 doors – one to open every day, starting December 1 and the largest December 24. It is a very fun and exciting tradition for children where they can count down the days to Christmas Eve and make this time even more special. The Adventskalender traditionally has either different pictures behind each door, little chocolates or sweets or nowadays even little toys. Wishing you and your families a happy and peaceful Adventszeit. 😊#GermanInstituteForTheSouthwest #GIS #learngermaninhouston #houston #htx #texas #tx #usa #germany #GermanHolidays #Advent #Adventskranz #Adventskalender ... What do you think of when you hear the words “public library”? Books? Films? Board games? Beautiful buildings? Or perhaps much more? Community. Free education. Freedom. Our Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schneider talked about Libraries as Social Institutions and his experience as a fellow of Thomas Mann House in Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles). We learned a lot! – For example that the role of public libraries is even more community-oriented and often privately financed by sponsors in the United States. Ulrich Schneider was director of Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig from January 2006 through March 2022. He plans to move to Vienna next year for an extended research period. Looking forward to seeing Prof. Dr. Schneider somewhere between Leipzig and Houston. 🙌🏻#leipzighouston ... See MoreSee Less

The opera ball was on last night. This year’s motto was « Bienvenue à la vie » 🇫🇷. While we did not have tickets this year to watch everything from inside, we enjoyed the view of the many elegantly dressed people, the fancy cars and the beautiful lights on the outside. We still have vivid memories of the #houston themed @leipzigeropernball 2015, when many of our members attended and partied. #leipzighouston #leipzig #leipzigeropernball ... See MoreSee Less
